What do you do with household batteries

Has anyone tried to scrap household batteries? If so how much for them or do you just mix them in with your steel?

I don't use enough to bother with. I take them to the recycling center

Modern household batteries - AA, AAA, 9V, C and D cells - are usually alkaline or zinc carbon.

Alkaline and zinc carbon batteries are expensive to properly recycle, and usually cost more to reprocess than the market value of the recovered materials. Most places charge to take them, or take them for free along with other more profitable materials.

Some yards might pay for them if they're mixed in with shredder scrap.

I save my batteries in a bag and take them to the hazardous waste collection day that our county sponsors. (once a year)

I throw them in a bucket, and when it gets full I take them into the hazardous waste section at our city dump.

our household hazardous waste will not take alkaline batteries any more, they just throw them away so I guess thats what I'll do as I am not sure if mixing them in with my scrap steel is cool to do...

There are actually a few scrap yards that will buy them, even though they are few and far between. I was googling scrap yards in Houston, and one quoted alkalines (AAA, AA, C & D) and ones they take in.
