I got this in a reply to one of the guys in charge of the town transfer station when I asked about why I can't take nice, functioning items out of the "e-waste" walk in container. I was curious why we now put fully functioning, nice, reusable electronic devices straight into the recycling stream. We have effectively removed "re-use" from the Reduce,Reuse, Recycle saying. And replaced it with "harvest the towns "E-scrap" and make money by cutting behind the curtain deals with the "recycler"

"XXXXXXXXXXX has a contract for E-Waste recycling with State of Connecticut approved vendor Green Monster recycling. The Town and E-Waste vendor follow the State statute on E-Waste. The items deposited in the E-Waste container are not open for salvaging because of the State guidelines associated with E-Waste and the Town's policy on savaging in the Transfer Station.

The Town policy reads no scavenging of disposed material other than the Swap Shack at the Transfer Station. If you have a valid permit, you are welcome to salvage items in the Swap Shack."

this is the guy that gets PAID to take away out stuff.

I've seen tons of vintage computers, Video game systems, DVD players, Phones, literally boxes of RAM. Boxes of cables... LCD TVs and monitors... It's not like it's just a shipping container filled with old CRTs, there's a ton of money in that thing...guy should be paying the town to take it especially considering his recycling center is little more than a half hour away!

On the old forum I remember reading "for every source of scrap you can't get, there are three others you can." Wise words to live by.

Go farther up the supply stream: set up in your home town or city collecting these items you want - offer free pickup at residences and businesses. Keep, sell or scrap what you want and dump the leftovers in your town's container. It's a win for everyone - well, mostly for you. :P

Or if you really want to be competitive, offer to pay for certain items.

And yes, the biggest money maker in e-scrap is the resale/repair/parts/refurbish sector. It's amazing what people give away because their wizbang is last year's model or has a minor repair issue.

I live in a pretty nice area and am thinking of doing this myself. Around here you can furnish your place simply by driving around on trash day.
