Bought a auto batt at Walmart and they added on a $15.00 charge bring back your old batt with reciept get the $15 back. Well as this batt only weighed 38 lbs it is not going to the scrap yard @ .20 a lb! I have not found many auto batteries lately this could be why. Last time the fee was only $4.00 for core charge!

I'll bet you it's some federal incentive paid to battery dealers to keep old ones out of the ecosystem.

In addition if the batteries brought are in decent shape maybe their easier to recycle into new batteries. There could be the assumption that a fresh 'bad' battery instantly changed for a new battery can some how be easier to recycle than one that has sat for 7 years in the shed with grass clipping and corroded out connectors.

They must have raised the charge when they realized more people were scrapping batteries and paying the $4-5 instead of returning them. The sanction was not expensive enough.

Walmart must generate a huge volume of batteries.

$0.20/lb is not a good price for batteries. I can get over $0.30/lb at the more competitive yards near me, and that's just for one or two at a time. Back in July I was getting $0.38 at local yards, and the best buyer in the area was paying $0.42/lb.

Lead acid batteries have one of the highest recycle rates of any material. I have seen recycling rates of 97% and higher quoted for them (in the US, at least). I think we have an effective enough incentive already - money!

Just because your math is totally accurate and your reasoning makes total sense, does not mean the government wiil not igrone it.

Maybe wal-mart is betting the small percentage of people who do not redeem the core will be worth the charge.

The Walmart Batteries are not worth taking home. Seen them dead in as little as a year. Pay the money and get a Good Deka or Interstate.

The interstate Hub is just up the road and pays 10ish for scrap batteries, I send all I get with a buddy to them. Even when we take off batteries we keep a few for cores, never know when you will want to keep the one in the car when buying a new one.

I'll second Deka batteries. All of our vehicles, the forklift, and my childhood go-kart have Deka batteries. They have proven very reliable, and with the exception of some of the smaller specialty batteries, they are made right here in Pennsylvania
