You better make sure it's not stolen before you sell it.

Go to 4chan and hit up the /n/ - Transportation Board. Get some advice there.

Are they serial numbered? How can you be sure if it's "hot"?

Found bike in alley by an over flowing shared garbage can. Both tires were flat. Filled them up yesterday and the tubes held, tires are ok. I need to check for a serial number. If the bike was stolen and the person got 2 flat tires riding down the alley and then dumped the bike, that would make sence. But as the tires hold air I am thinking someone just threw it away. I don't want to take it to a pawn shop or bike shop and find out it was stolen! Checked the TPD website looking for lost and found section or a list of stolen bikes etc, but no luck...

I would say once you find the serial number go ask the local police wherever
you are. Hopefully if it is stolen the person who it was stolen from wasn't too
dis-spirited to bother repoting it. Around where I live bike thefts are a very
non-priority crime for the local police...this means an increase in potential
vigilanteism though. If you sell someone a bike and it comes close to getting
them killed they will be very dis-pleased with you. ^_-

You however may live in an area where the police still care.

This is what I will be doing with the bike that ended up next to the trash at work. Hope I can keep the bike as it's a Trek, albeit a kids bike. Still a nice bike.

Have not done anything with the bike. Had a 37 gal fish tank break in the house this week, have some water damage, homeowners insurance to deal with... fun times...

Sorry to hear that. Did the fishies survive?
