A guy I know in town was taking aluminum cans from recycling bins on trash day, he got caught by a cop and was told that if they caught him again he would be fined.
Does that only apply to stuff in recycle bins or to anything set out for trash?

I believe the laws on this vary by location, but in general I think it's okay to take trash as it is going to the dump anyways and the trash guys probably appreciate it.

Generally speaking, anything that is taken to the street to be dumped is considered to be "abandoned" and is fair game for taking. However, local municipalities and governments are allowed to make laws that restrict people from taking things such as bulky items and things thrown into recycling bins.

It looks like it is against the law here. But by the time the city guys come the only things left are yard waste and broken furnature. It still takes them all week to do the pick up though! Lots of breaks!

Aluminum cans are the main thing, if not the only item of the recyclable items, that actually makes money for the city which they use for funding their program. Of course if you take something out of their containers you're taking money from the city.

When I read the title I was thinking more along the lines of taking stuff from the side of the road/highway. I always see stuff when driving on the freeway. Anyone know if it's legal to stop and grab it? Or is that considered gov't property?

I'm going to try that, although last time I stopped on the side of the freeway, to check my load, a state funded tow truck was on my ass in seconds.

LOL I routinely put deposit bottles in my recycle bin worth a nickel each(and yes they get picked through at 4 AM) but try to be sneaky to pick a copper penny out of the give and take bin at 7-11..sigh its a sickness...

I have a friend who says his uncle started off by picking up the torn tire bits on the side of the freeway from cars that blow their tires. Apparently there's contracts for companies to pick that stuff up off the side of the freeways. Specifically tires.
