I gladly pay people in my area 80-85 cents per pound for their aluminum cans when I can find sellers on Craigslist, etc.. But is there an affordable way for those outside my local area to ship me their crushed aluminum cans if they want me to buy their cans for cash, copper, silver etc? Has anyone ever tried to see how many pounds of crushed cans they can fit in a large flat rate USPS box or USPS parcel post box?

Even is you had a perfect cube of crashed cans a large flat rate box can only hold 69 pounds.

Its a USPS policy- no package can exceed 70 pounds

They'll mail it if it's 70 lbs 0 oz.

Even IF you could fit 70 pounds of cans in a USPS flat rate box, that would be over $.20 per pound for shipping. Who wants to lose $.20 per pound when you can get a good price locally?

Set up buying stations in surrounding towns. Make a deal with a gas station owner or something to set up once a month for a few hours and put out flyers in said towns. It will take a few months but people will catch on and save cans for you if you are 1. beating the local price and 2. paying cash.

There, problem solved!

Good idea! I imagine the biggest headache would be city governments and their regulations. Would be nice if I could find creative ways to dodge those bullets.

Most cities will not say much when you are recycling items. Everyone wants to be green.

yes, but it was bottles I think. Kramer and Newman were trying to double their payout by driving a US postal truck to MI. It's funny, check it out

I found a good way to ship:

Cast them into 5lb bars, then box em up!
