So there is a local thrift store for clothing and other things to help people out in hard times.

A lot of people like to dump off their junk as a "donation"...

I recently contacted them about helping them get rid of any junk electronics that get dropped off there. So today when I went by the guy put a small wall unit air conditioner. I know there is some copper in it but I also know that i need to drain some things such as freon and other chemicals.

Anybody know where to drain these chemicals?

If you were to dispose of the refrigerant properly it would probably cost you more than the scrap value.

so window a/c unit scrapping is a waste of time and money?

the only way to properly do that is to have a recovery tank and unit. window units are a sealed system so you would have to have a piercing valve to get access to the freon. If you are not CFC certified you can get in trouble for even messing with it. I would say its not worth your time if you dont have a proper tools to recover the freon. It has been illegal to knowingly vent cfc or hcfc since july 1 1992. i think if someone cathes you and turns you in epa can fine you up to 37500 a day.

Ok, so is there any copper I can get off that thing, other than the power cord? or just take it to a yard as is and get whatever they give me?

They may not take it due to the refrigerant liability.

However, if you find one that leaked out all the gas then dismantle it.
The compressor would need to be soldered shut.

Call your yard and ask how they will take it.
