This pic is from google images, but is the same date and denomination as mine. It says "AN 14" for "Anno Napolean 14", the 14th year of his reign (1806). Very cool. And the best part? I got it for spot with gold at $1350. It is about .37 ounces. And if you are reading this Country, it is not for sale :D :P

Very sweet! Thats an awesome score.

$505 for these is a GOOD BUY!!! These go for $700 and up. Congrats...

The 20F Napoleon I coins are half the size of this coin. If you're lucky, you can get these for less than $300 on EBAY.

Both 20F and 40F coins are veritable pieces of history. When paid in GOLD, the French Army pay rates in 1803 follows:

Wow nice chart, Country. For "Liberty Equality & Fraternity" they sure had an absurdly hierachical payscale!

Maybe my coin was used to pay a French General prior to Waterloo. :)

Got an original Emperor Napolean I 40 Francs!

Postby BCNumismatics » Fri Nov 05, 2010 1:25 am

The 'AN 14' is actually referring to the French Republican calendar, which was in official use from 1792 until around 1808.

None of the 40 Francs of any reign are common.

Interestingly,Emperor Napoleon I's earliest coins are inscribed 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAIS' (French Republic),yet the 1st. Empire was declared in 1804.

That is one interesting coin that you have got there.

Which one do you think it might have been?
