precisely what I thought when I read that article.

...countries planning to stop exchanging old money for the common currency are Cyprus (2017), Malta (2018), Portugal (2022) and The Netherlands (2032). Spain is set to join them ... the peseta’s last day as a valid currency should be Dec. 31, 2020

If the euro does fail they may need to have a few of the old ones on hand since they're obselete they won't mint or print any more of them so they will be more valueable than the euro.
