1958 Haitian coin. Silver?

Postby theo » Sat Oct 16, 2010 8:08 pm

I have a "Republique D'Haiti" coin that I was curious about. On the back it says "liberte, egalite and fraternite" with the number "10" on the bottom. It is nearly the size of a U.S. quarter and weighs a little more than 4 grams.

I'm almost positive it is silver as it has a white appearance and makes the familiar chime sound. However, I wanted to make sure of this and confirm the purity.

Thanks.

Umm I suppose you're right. I was thinking that it was unlikley that a country as poor as Haiti would be minting silver coins when many more advanced countries (Great Britain, France. . . etc) had switched to base metals. That being said, it really does sound like silver.

Thanks for the info.

it is struck in a Copper-Nickel-Zinc alloy that makes it "silver-ish", but alas, not silver.

I have several of the 58s and would've been willing to bet they were silver. They wear like silver coins, they even have the "silver ring" when dropped on a hard surface.

Looked them up in the Krause World Coin books and found out they're CuNi. I still keep them with my foreign silver just because ............
