Melt value of Mexican Coins

Postby Derek.Sheriff » Wed Oct 27, 2010 1:49 am

I know coinflation.com will have a Mexican coin page at some point. Until then, does anyone know if there are any Mexican coins in circulation that have a melt value higher than their face value like the US pre-1982 penny? Thanks!

Currently circulating Mexico reform coinage:

5c - 1.6g stainless steel
10c - 2.03g stainless steel
20c - Aluminum-bronze
50c - Aluminum-bronze
Peso (new) - stainless steel ring around Aluminum-bronze center 3.95g

Older copper coinage that exceeded melt value I have heard has been removed from circulation.

Except for a stray coin, I don't think there is much left of value anymore.

Thanks Country! My fantasy was that maybe there was some Mexican coin out there still in circulation with at least the core or the ring made of pure copper or nickel. A man can dream can't he?

The 50 centavo is 92% Cu. I sold about 10 pounds or so to the Copper Cave (can't remember exactly how many) and they were listed there until they sold out. They are a good thing to accumulate if you can find them in large amounts.

You can see the old listing here: http://www.sushob.com/copper/index.php? ... ductId=290
