Does anyone here buy the world coin lots on ebay?

Postby PolishPunisher » Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:19 pm

Does anyone here buy the world coin lots on ebay? I noticed there are tons of listing for them. Is there anything of value in buying these? What is a fair price to pay? I was thinking about buying a couple to familiarize myself with more foreign coins. What would be a fair price per pound? Thanks.

I have bought world coin lots before and done well. DO NOT BUY RANDOMLY. Make sure the picture is what you will receive and then see if you can identify any silver coins and calculate how much to bid (for foreign silver, probably not a good idea to pay full spot price.) Just my $0.02

For non-silver coins, I'm not sure how much to pay...I think Cerulean is buying world coins at $3/lb, maybe he'll chime in here.

i try to stay around $5 per pound

like roadrunner said - buy the lots that picture the exact coins you will be getting

look for redeemable coins

i have a few base metal coins i specifically look for

i'd give more tips but i dont want you out there bidding against me :D

world coins are an excellent hobby

ive learned a TON of information about foreign countries just from their coins

I agree $5 a pound is a fair price for a good mixture...

Most of the groups on Ebay are pretty pricey so I've never tried it.

I'm sure a few members here, such as myself.. could provide fun lots at $5 a pound.. but all the silver and copper might be removed.

I would be willing to take a look at a photo of the lot if you wanted to sell. Although I assume you take out any coins of legal, redeemable or metal value. :D

I'd like to see how many aluminum coins it would take to make a pound.

I use foreign coins in my geography class. As a project, I give each student a small handful of random foreign coins and have them use them to do some research on those countries. You can tell a lot about a country just by what and who they decide to put on their money.

I have a huge pile going that I'm going to need to get rid of, like 100+ pounds. Given my business, Commonwealth Coin & Currency, I take out all the primary currencies for face value as well as the .999 nickel. However, I don't pull any CuNi for metal content, so there is a huge amount of it in my "junk" pile.

And how much a pound shipped for that?

No.
1. It's usually more than double its melt value
2. I'm 17, so I can't use ebay yet.

Years ago, I bought three large lots from three separate dealers. Only one was on ebay. I don't have my records so can't name names or prices, but the ebay seller was my least favorite. The best was from Black Mountain coins. The third was from an online seller no longer in business.

If it is your first batch, you don't know what is and isn't good, so you'll accept whatever you get! Many are from Europe 1950s-1990s before the euro or other coins that have been de-monetised and are 'worthless'.

$5-7/lb is what I hear thrown around the internet, but I don't know the quality you get for that. Also, the more pounds you get, the less you pay in shipping.

You won't buy them for close to 'melt value'. You buy them because it's a hobby and you like learning about history, geography, etc. . .
