Panamanian URRACA Indian Head cents.

Postby henrysmedford » Thu Nov 24, 2011 6:24 pm

Does any one else find them. Franklin is up to 15.
From wikipedia --
Urracá was an indigenous Guaymí chieftain or cacique who fought effectively against the Spanish conquistadors. Captured at one point by conquistadors, Urracá managed to escape a Spanish bound ship and rejoin his own people, and continue leading the fight against the Spanish until his death in 1531.[1] His face can be found on the smallest-denomination centesimo coin of Panama.

Yeah - run into a lot of them in CWR. Don't know that I have 15, but a few.

I would think that there are more Panamanians in Florida than Oregon.

Maybe - haven't checked the distances, but Oregon may be closer to Panama than Florida is... ;)

I have found 1 in Minnesota. It was on the end of a BWR, I was like what the heck is that thing? I really like this coin and would like to find more.

I have found a half dozen while sorting, and have a bunch more that I get in my world coin lots that I get from the coin store.

I also get Bermuda pennies with a pig on them on occassion.

They are worth a cent because Panama uses the USD but issues their own coins.

I have found 3 or 4 of them in the past in my penny searching here in Oklahoma but did not know where they were from. Thanks for the info.

Just found a 1935 Panama cent today from a junk bin. It turns out it was the first year that cents were minted in Panama and it only has a mintage of 200,000. I thought it was pretty interesting

Look at the prices on Ebay does not look to be junk! http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_nkw=Panama%201935%201%20Centesimo%20XF%20KM14&_itemId=360204907798

I have found only one in roll sorting, but have pulled 30 from world coin lots searching. Oldest one I have is 1937, newest is 1983. Most common dates found are 1953, 1966, and 1977. Still hoping to find the 1935, seems strange I can't find anything dated after 1983. I think they are cool, hope to get more.

These two and a 1979 were in a small bag of foreign cents I picked up at a shop. I don't see them in bank rolls or CWRs here in PA, have only ever found one in rolls. Still haven't found any after 1983 though.
