Error by NGC on 1970-S Small Date!!??

Postby Silver_Stampede » Tue Dec 06, 2011 2:12 pm

So over the past few weeks I got interested in the 1960-P and 1970-S small date lincoln memorials. I have looked at so many pictures and coins that I can finally say that I can tell the difference between the small and large dates. So what got me all crazy was looking at this coin on ebay. It is a 1970-S Small date graded by NGC, but when I look at the close up pictures I can SWEAR it is a large date! Look how low the 7 is, and look at the curve on the 9 (it is pointing toward the S, not to horizontal)! Am I missing something here or did NGC really make a mistake!? Anyone else here interested in the small dates?

Many of you already know about it but here is a great resource for small and large date lincoln memorials:

you are correct that is a "Large Date" all day long. Check out how far to the left the minktmark appears below the 7.

Nice catch

Taken from the E-Bay description "These are hard to tell the difference between a Small and Large Date raw. Buying one Graded you know you have the right one."
Thats really funny!

I am no expert but am going to have to disagree with you and say it is a small date. The picture is blurry when you zoom giving to the affect that its not pointing at the 7. I actually see that it is. The best way to tell this is a small date is the 0. The small date one has a smaller inside than the LD. So i would Say without a doubt that NGC got this one right. Remember always check all the diagnostics when checking

daviscfad, check out the pictures lower down the page, they are much clearer and can be supersized. Still think its a large date?

I am still on the "large date" boat. That darn seven is HUGE Edit to add: I don't even know any more. Spence is right about the Zero.

My exact thoughts:
Mintmark location favors Large
9 favors Large
7 Screams Large
0 screams Small
NGC labels Small (and they put a loupe on it, but do make mistakes every blue moon or so)

So without holding it in my hand or without great quality high res photos.....it's a guessing game.

wow after looking at those close up pics again I am not sure now. The 7 screams large date to me because it is so low and so big, but the zero definitely looks like a small date, and the loop in the 9 is looking more and more like a small date as well. It is as if this coin is a hybrid of the SD and LD. I am going to assume NGC has a hierarchy of importance when assigning small date vs large date, ie maybe the 0 is more important to them than the placement of the 7!? I own a small date and looking at it under magnification the 7 is definitely smaller and on equal level with the 0, that is the main thing that tripped me up about this coin. Haha the 1970-S SD is really a pain in the ass...

Chuck said with the image provided which was the same as the one doc posted it was for sure a large date so I guess it is.

wow, a $75 coin turned into a $1 coin in a matter of seconds. NGC should offer some type of restitution to the buyer should they ever figure out the mistake...unless there are some TPG finatics out there that would pay a premium for an error slab!!!??? haha :D
