1957 D Machine Doubled or Double Die

Postby JobIII » Tue Feb 07, 2012 10:12 pm

Hi all,

Accidentally found this coin while making space on the coin desk for Half dollars. I've been neglecting my loupe and microscope a lot these days. Anyways this penny stood out a little. So I dusted off these toys to take a closer look, and I'm very happy that I did it :D

Here's the link to the coin, 2 of the Obverse (where the doubling is present) and 1 of the Reverse.

Also, I must be getting really bad at photography because this took me like an hour to get a few shots i was happy with. To all you out there that take and post photos here, you have my heart felt respect.

Enjoy,
~JobIII

Gotta be machine doubling......the date looks great.

It's a $$$$ on ebay, though!

Awesome find!

Thats MD, but its a strong md and is collectible.
To the right person it may be worth a buck or two.

You really need to take the picture head on. its not a DOUBLED DIE. From the picture provided it looks more like die deterioration.

Head on you say. I'll have to try it again. Here's to another hour or so to get 1 or 2 quality shots

Thanks for the comments and looking at the pictures.

Yep... "Head-on. Apply directly to the forehead."

Or... actually... lay it flat on a scanner. Works pretty well for me.

So I just took a series of overhead pictures for all you critics of the slightly askew approach. Unfortunately I couldn't hold the magnifying glass in place and take the photo with this new angle (i mean i could but it wouldn't be in focus  ). I still think the detail is there, with the strongest doubling showing up on Lincoln's; forehead, nose, mouth, chin, 1, 5.

Here is the link: http://www.xxjobiiixx.blogspot.com/2012 ... ie-or.html.

I have an old error book that was published in the 70's :o . This error was already documented way back then, and in good condition was priced at $1.00. I may just try and get something for it on ebay.

Enjoy

I agree that it is NOT a double die. If it was the letters and numbers would show doubling too

Worn out die? I'm not really sure I follow. Is this like the poor man's 1955 ddo?
