Friend of mine asked to help her with a Matron Head large cent. It is beat up.. I can't read the date.

If it has no date a dealer won't offer you anything for it. You might try putting it on ebay--could probably get a couple dollars for it there. There are varieties of Matron head large cents, but they have to be in pretty good shape to identify most varieties. If she has kids or grandkids, it would be a great coin to introduce them to collecting. I have a very worn 1854 cent that my grandmother gave me--it's one of the first coins I got when I was 9 or 10 and to me it's priceless!
