I was wondering what my average grade for my slabbed coins would be so I did the math.

Average grade is approximately MS-63.9

Who's next?

I sent in two early US large cents. One came back ungraded, the other...

POOR 1.

P01 assuming it is PCGS is actually worth a premium in many of the dates. Basically as long as the cent is 1809 or later a P01 is generally a premium. Were it a Morgan, Commem, or Peace it would have a 10x premium :)

Morgan wise I'm probably in last place (for now :) ) my average grade of my Morgan Basic set is only 60.526! I think that is weighted such that the hard coins get more points, but still not a very high average :)

And since it's only 68% complete my true average for all 97 coins is 37.846! Now that's abysmal!

I'm going to mark this post and check my average next year. I'll try to rise up :)

68%! wow man......I need to hunt your set down and see what I can talk you out of for my own set.

Edit to add: I have a few "extra" coins you could use for your set after some review. example....handpicked 1882-O MS-64 ;)

I bought almost all my Morgans back in 2002. Since then I've primarily worked on my various type sets. Right now, for some reason I'm trying to complete my Lincoln set.

After some review.....with our sets combined......we'd be in the top 100 easy. :)

The Trotebaugh collection

Top 100, woo hoo!

The only Morgans I have on my sights this year are upgrades for my type sets. But I'll sprinkle a couple in just for giggles if I have extra money. Which isn't something that seems to happen too often with my coin budget. Usually it is redlining every month :)

Yes. Morgans and Commemeratives especially.

Other coins outside super old (1809 and older generally carry no premium) also carry a premium.

Here is a list of my collection of certified coins that are not PCGS:

We both have our star coins.....but you tend to have a few more than I. My problem is not bankroll so much as its eye apeal (at my current rate). I demand sexy coins. Some dates (1899-S) just don't offer alot of that. Some (1881-S) offer that at every turn. I also love to buy gems holdered as 64's

So I tool along hunting DAILY to find that perfect fit.......with about 1 coin making the "grade" each month. Often time the coin is raw or in someone elses holder.

All this is what makes it fun. I know that I will never crack the top ten, heck not even the 50.......but I want my set to blow the socks off anyone that Knows the series when it is presented before them.

When I focus on one of my coin projects I tend to have 1 of 2 goals in mind:

- Just completing the set. In which case I tend to buy a reasonable available piece and I'll buy several coins at once.

- Upgrading a particular piece as high as I can afford. In this case, assuming the coin is 1964 or previously I demand CAC and a good eye appealing coin.

As a result my low end coins are probably mostly average to sub-par for the grade but my high end coins are generally great for the grade :)

My Lincolns for example includes several 66's and 67's that are nice red with CAC stickers and the rest of the set is a bunch of dreck :)

MH, I remember a comment you made years ago. I think you said that you didn't have that many coins but what you did have were key dates in MS condition. If I had it to do all over again, that is the route I would take. Keys' appreciate much faster than non-keys.

MH's comment is a VERY VERY good one.

If you look at the price escalation in numismatics it generally heavily favors the "keys".

Of course, then you have less coins and less coins is worse :)
