The U.S. Mint announced that it was going to make circulation-strike (not Proof) Washington quarters at the San Francisco Mint, for the first time since 1954. See-- http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/?action=press_release&id=1363 At a cost of .35 cents each I am thinking of buying a few bags and doing some wild seeding.

United States Mint to Release the First America the Beautiful Quarters® Program Coin with the San Francisco Mint mark on June 21

Collectors will be able to purchase the "S" mint mark El Yunque National Forest Quarters in 100-coin bags priced at $34.95 or 40-coin rolls priced at $18.95. I wonder if it is a one time deal or if the SF mint is going to produce business strikes of all the rest of the National Parks quarters? I wouldn't mind buying a few bags if it was limited to one time. So far, still not listed on mints website.

Still not on mint's website catalog. Looks like they aren't going to list it until 21 Jun, the day the mint starts taking orders.

Put my order in for 3 bags today. Hopefully, this is a one time issue and being from SF, these coins will be worth more than the 35 cents apiece that they cost. Oh, and i wonder what are the odds of finding a bagfull of silver proofs instead of the clad circulation strike.

White said any customer who has received a Birth Set with a silver Proof half dollar and wants a replacement should contact the Mint Call Center at 800-872-6468.

Cool story but any dufus that returns that silver proof needs to have his head examined. If that happened to me I would be making some big bucks. Anyway, finding just one silver quarter in a bag would make my day although it would be hard to prove it came from the bag since it would be open.

Got my 3 bags of 2012 S quarters today. Opened one bag, looked at several coins and they are indeed circulation strike quarters. I was thinking of listing a bunch of them on ebay. Wonder if I could sell a bunch considering on the mint's website, the quarters are now showing an available shipping date of July 12th. Anyway, here's a scan of one of them.

Anyone ever run across one of these in the wild? Was this a one time deal or did the mint do this again for another quarter?

Thanks, Starfire, for bringing this old thread back up. I never knew there was such a thing as an S-mint circulation strike after 1954. I don't remember ever seeing one, but then again I didn't know to be on the lookout for them.

I guess the key thing is that a coin can be rare, but if there is no real demand for it and I have a super hard time selling it, then it isn't worth my time in digging them up. Example: Think about all the 2002 and later Kennedy halves with mintage of about 1-3 million. Those are really tough coins to find and should be quite valuable, but I have a very hard time selling them in AU/BU condition for more than about 60-65 cents each (with occasional exceptions).

These nifc coins should be at least worth a little more than face value you would hope as they cost more than face to get. I keep the ones I find.

ATB S clad quarters cost $.40 each
JFK half NIFC cost $.73 each
Native American and American Innovation dollars cost $1.17 each

So for free I will keep them, even though they are only worth face value
