1922...A bad year

For an upcoming 90th birthday present, I thought about picking up a choice slabbed buffalo nickel. The guy whose birthday it is has a small coin collection. So I grab a recent guide to estimate what I should be paying for a 1922, and...hmmm, what's this? No 1922 nickels minted.

Ok, maybe a nice Mercury then. Nope. No dimes minted that year. And no quarters, and no half dollars either. Guess I just never noticed before.

There was only a token effort to produce Lincoln cents at the Denver mint. No Philadelphia. But it was a huge year for the Peace dollar.

I know the story behind the Peace dollar, but what was going on with the other coinage?
