I've been going over Lincoln cents that I have and I noticed a placement difference in the mint mark. one is closer to the date by my eye (which isn't very good) than the other. Can anyone shed light on this for me? I know, ANOTHER NEWBY QUESTION. I'm sorry, but I am curious.
Thank You
ED

These are some different pics with a clearer view. I have been searching until I've nearly blinded myself. All I know the "s" is different on each cent. Any ideas?
Thanks

the mint marks were hand punched into the dies back then so the position did vary from one die to the next.

I have always thought the 1927D mint mark had erratic spacing. So I grabbed all the ones I could find, and guess what! If you watch the 8 pics in succession, you can see it "walks" from the left to the right...
It's very hard to get the EXACT same section of a coin for comparison, but I did a lot of cropping in order to focus on the right area and get them lined up as well as possible.
Hit CTRL and minus or CTRL and + on your keyboard, and you can see them all a little better.
