I can quit work because of these coins, right?

Postby Corsair » Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:56 pm

Hello folks-

The following two coins are a couple of cents I've found in my recent searches. I doubt they are worth much, but my knowledge of error coins is next to nil. I'd take a guess and say the second is a "die cud," but I don't really know much more about that, or how many trips to Hawaii these coins will buy me. Thanks for your input in advance.

1: PMD
2: Cud, rather large one at that. No idea what the value would be though.

The cud is on the reverse rim. It goes from the top of the right wheat stalk to halfway down the wheat stalk.

I agree on the PMD on the LMC.
The cud is nice but will only get maybe a couple bucks. It doesn't seem to be in a high grade. What does the OBV look like, is it worn or is it nice?

That's a link to the auction on fleabay. I might have been exaggerating just slightly when I said $50.

Corsair, it sure looks like there's a die crack from the top of the left wheat ear to the rim through the "E"

don't give up on the Memorial just yet, it could be a struck through error but the indentations on the obverse are making me scratch my head :?

RR-

Nice eye. I checked the coin under a magnifying glass and it looks like that's just an ordinary nick.

And bman, I'll keep that one separate and toss it up on the 'Bay after my Wheatie ends.

I'm not. If you are, I would certainly appreciate it if you dropped a link to this thread onto their forum.

Hey Corsair,
Mike Diamond just posted on the Coin Community forum that he thinks it's an error.
He is the president of CONECA http://conecaonline.org/ 8-)

I think Mike Diamond is dead on...

The trough is too uneven to be machined.

PMD mechanical "squishing" would have pushed metal out along the trough and edges.

Acid damage would not account for weakness around the obverse rim.

I have found a penny very similar to the 1980 above except with a normal obverse just recently. Thought it was quite strange and kept it aside because it is actually in pretty decent shape. Think mine is an 86 though. One thing is different on mine and that is that you can see the details where the weird trough goes across the back. Anyone have an idea of what would cause this error?

Thanks for all your help on these coins, folks. Mr. Diamond has made an offer for the Memorial, and I have sold the coin to him with one caveat. He said that this coin would appear in an upcoming edition of his magazine, and my stipulation was that I had to receive an issue of that magazine as well as payment. He happily agreed.

As for the Wheat penny, it's still up for auction on the 'Bay, so if anyone is interested in owning it, please feel free to place a bid.

Congratulations!

Will you give us a ballpark?

I'd feel uncomfortable giving an exact number even though it appears Mr. Diamond is not part of the forum. I will say however it's more than enough to buy an ounce of silver.

I've seen where people have found a silver dime in a roll of cents but never a whole OZ of silver!

Did you guys see this in the most recent issue of coin world? Feb 7, 2011 P242.

They give reference to coincommunity.com and not realcent!
here's the link: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topi ... C_ID=78150

I saw the name and recognized that that was corsair on realcent. I then went to the coin community website and saw the post referred to realcent which lead me to this thread.
