I believe those coins begin their life as actual production errors. The waffle machine is the great equalizer of error coins that may have been worth hundreds or more if they escaped into circulation.

Not a bad way to dispose of the remaining bloated glut of State Quarters still residing in the Treasury's vaults. Pound and bend them into squares, triangles and the likeness of your favorite politician. I call this National Debt reduction at its finest.
