1974-S Bank Roll of Cents.

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Sun Jan 09, 2011 3:23 am

If I'm lucky I just won an auction and included was a 1974S bank roll...unopened. So, my fingers are crossed about this. I was more interested in the othe items. Anyway, what will the 74S's be worth in they are AU/BU? Now I've read that there is a Type I and a Type II for the 1974S. Anybody want to throw me some ideas about this. Thanks, as always, for the help.

http://lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1974.html

One of the easiest ways to tell the difference between large and small is to look at the motto, " in god we trust ". The large date has the motto right next to the rim almost touching, and the small date is about a normal distance.

That was one website I was looking at....but the question is of their value. If these are uncirculated, what would their value be? I've read where there would be little difference in price between the two. But, no price is stated. I'm just looking at my options of keeping them or selling them...or just selling the whole roll at once. Any thoughts?

As far as I know the large dates are more common, but the small dates are not scarce by no means. As far as the price goes I believe most people don't really care if its large or small date and prices are pretty equal. Small dates in BU Unc. should be valued a little higher since they are less common, IMO.
Numusmedia has the 74's as follows;
74 - MS-65- $13.20
74-D- MS-65- $13.20
74-S- MS-65 $18.00
These are in RED, but no mention of T1 or T2

The seller just confirmed that he bought the roll himself back in 1974.....so I hope it didn't age too well in the roll. Should I crack it open? Fun things to think about.

I don't have a current greysheet right now but you might also check out BU roll prices on there to get an idea of a common Uncirculated roll of 74-s pennies. Its hard to get good money out of BU rolls most of the time. Good luck to you! I used to sell and collect nothing but unopened original bank rolls of cents and for the most part most of all dealers will just go by the bu roll prices on the greysheet with a discount. It is generally assumed that most bu rolls are lottery tickets, rarely paying off....

I saw an old price of $10 for MS65 1974S. So, I thought these might be worth more than face value.

Looks like they are trading from 4.00-10.00 per unopened roll on EBAY right now. Its funny though with those price guides, who is going to pay 10.00 for a MS-65 1974-s? I assume it would have to be professionally gradedto get close to that price. At that point you would have to assume the person is just paying for the plastic and not the coin. I learned this lesson the very hard way when I first started out, way overpaying for bu rolls thinking I was going to strike it rich, he he.

Yepper...but this was just something added to the auction. I guess I'll just offer these one at a time to help out people who want a BU for their album. I guess that'll be an upgrade for alot of collectors here.

My winning package came today in the mail. And, yepper, it's a 1974S roll from BofA. The 2 on the ends show natural toning. Guess I'll find something to do with them.
