I am having the kids sort the Lincoln Memorials by date and mint. My wife came up with using egg cartons and it works great! With four you get holes for all but two. We left out the 59s and stack them to the side.

How do you get them out, without spilling everything?

When a hole gets about 15 coins we pull them out and into the coin tube they go. When the coin tube gets fifty into the roll they go. The way the carton is made it is easy to use your fingers to lift them out. Also being here on the west coast the d and s fills up faster than the p .

Now thats a cool set up. So what are you and Franklin doing with the finished Mint/Date Rolls? Making roll sets or box sets?

Pretty good looking sale. Lots of solid Wheat rolls there.

This is a great low-tech way to get everyone involved in the sort. This worked well even back in the 50s and 60s.

What also works great is the plastic fishing tackle insert type boxes. They snap shut, keeps them safe from spilling, adjustable column sizing so you can make room for a bunch of 50's little less for 40's and so on as needed. I actually have a bunch already marked/labeled that I need to get rid of.

I'm stealing your idea before you get it patented.

Pam asked the same thing I wanted to ask. How are things going with Franklin?

By the way, great idea on the egg cartons. In my area they are made of plastic. I would think pennies might not react well to a plastic egg carton, so I would have to sort in a different way. In my case I only sort the following:
1982's
Pre 82 coppers (Lincoln Memorials)
Wheats (40-58)
Wheats (pre-40)
Really good dates are kept separate
