Listed what I thought was a decent example of an 09 VDB, expected it to fetch maybe $8-$10. It got crazy in the last 15 minutes!

Really that is crazy, maybe 2 guys thought they saw an S on there. Why else would they bid so much? If you squint your eyes and sniff some glue, then you can almost see it. But nothing else on the coin is worn. It was just your lucky day!

Maybe not.

Buyer is claiming his son was using his phone and now wants out.

What can you do? No way it was his sons? What other items has this guy bid on?

Just got off the phone with an eBay rep who said it's best to cancel the transaction and send a 2nd chance offer to the next bidder, who's last bid was $66, so that's what I did. Still fishy though. The cancel pleas came within seconds of the auction's end.

Haven't heard a peep from the 2nd chance offer, probably because they're thinking shill. Or I was double-teamed by two pranksters.

Either way, where's the punishment for these unscrupulous bidders?? What happened to a bid being a contract? The phoney high bidder is begging me not to ding his 100% feeback rating of...get this...18 transactions.

You can't ding his feedback. Sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers. What you can do is use the "report a buyer" link so there's at least a behind-the-scenes record of the problem. If a buyer gets enough of those eBay will eventually shut them down (until they open a new account ).

What I see is people leaving negative comments using the positive feedback option. The 2nd chance bidder has more than a dozen of these in the last month for non payment, so it's no doubt I was double-teamed. None for the orig bidder though. Good thing is I can block them in future, but as you said natsb88, only until they start a new acct. Still can prob sell this the legit-looking bidder down at around $8. *sigh*

What is the purpose of them double teaming you to run up the price and then not pay? What do they get out of it? Why would they do it? I guess I just don't understand the motivation.

The same reason people troll...for the kicks, I guess.

this is why I hate ebay, and refused to sell on there, even though I have stellar feedback, no negative, and was a powerseller. Just all around sick of the people. I quit when they took away the option for the seller to leave a negative feedback.

The main reason I still do it, is the huge audience, though sometimes even that backfires. Two or three of my silver coin auctions ended up ridiculously under melt (a G/VG 1925 SLQ for $1.85?? Ouch!). But pymt is fast, shipping couldn't be easier, and I'm genuinely surprised at what some coins go for.

Btw, I eventually re-sold the above "wild auction" VDB for a more realistic $9.50.
