I'm confused

Postby abe » Tue Feb 22, 2011 7:19 pm

On another forum they have an auction section and in this section was a 2002-D Sac. $1 PCGS certified MS-67. I checked Numismedia prices and it has $25 for a MS-67, I bid on the coin a won it for $4 + $2.50 shipping. I'm all smiles right :D ,
Wrong, I ask one of my favorite coin companies what their buy and sell price was for this coin and they say they would purchase it for $3 and sell it for $5.
See why I'm confused, does Numismedia need to be updated or am I missing something here?
I think its still a great buy for an MS-67, so what do y'all think?

Their prices are always high, but this is the worst percentage I've ever heard.
The grading alone probably cost a minimum 5 bucks, so it was still a good buy.

I'm starting to wonder if I was given an improper estimation on buy & sell prices. Maybe they got their numbers twisted somehow.

Coins do NOT have a manufacturers list price tagged on them. Anyone, anywhere, anytime can price a coin for anything they want. For what you paid for any coin in a PCGS slab, you came out way ahead. I really wouldn't have even looked up any possible values for that coin for what you paid since it usually costs a lot more to have it graded.

I have to agree here. Like many others have said about collectible coins, "They are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them".

The reason why these kinds of deals come through is when a dealer sends in a large bulk of (in this case Sac $1) hoping to get a super high grade, whatever is a nuclear price for the coin.

The rest (that don't make the grade) which is what you bought, is sold off to recuperate losses.
