No More President Dollars?

Just got my latest copy of Numismatic News. On the cover there is a story that says they are thinking of stopping the president coin series. Which I guess is no surprise they have over a billion of them stacked up in the federal reserve vaults and no one wants to use them. I kind of like them. I use them once in a while for small purchases. I always wonder what kind of response I am going to get when I hand a couple to the clerk.

But that figures they would discontinue the only series I decided to collect and have really tried to keep current on each time one comes out. Well I guess if they do stop the series I can just start spending all those unopened rolls I have. I won't have to ask at the bank for a couple of rolls like I do now when I go in there.

Do you think if they made a higher denomination coin people would use them? Seems to make more sense to me. If you could carry a couple of $20.00 coins in your pocket you are more likely to do that than carry 40 of these president dollar coins around.

I don't want them to stop the Presidential dollars.

I want them to stop the $1 bill.

It all depends on the banks attitude towards them as to how well they circulate.

Tellers hate halves and dollars.

Plus the .88 sienorage on them, the fed dislikes that.

Looks to me that they are going to cut back from 4 to 2 coins. They also might delay up to 15 years... But reading those HB's makes little sense sometimes.

I have a friend who carries several Prez dollars with him while golfing. He says their gold color makes a good ball marker on the green. Not being a golfer, I can't say whether someone has actually found a practical use for these or he's just a goof. He also said that he incorporates the Prez dollars into part of the tip he gives to the caddy. He laughingly said there's been a couple times when the caddy has looked at him completely baffled about what they are.

Secretly, I believe he was one of the now-banned people who was using his credit card to purchase $250 boxes from the Mint to pump up his frequent flier miles. Of course, he unequivocally denies doing this, but seems to me he's taking a lot of vacations...................
