Coin Collecting Blasphemy?

Postby Hawkeye » Mon Aug 15, 2011 10:11 am

What I am about to say and ask may be considered coin collecting blasphemy. Everyone seems enamored with them, and I have a few myself. But does anyone else think that Morgan silver dollars are ugly coins? I definitely don't think that they are the "ugliest" coin out there; not even close. But, personally, I don't see the appeal. I just don't think they are that great looking. In fact, I think Peace dollars are much nicer looking coins. So, at risk of losing my "coin collector license," I ask: does anyone else think this? Of course, coin collecting is all about personal preference, so if you love Morgans, why is it? Is it just the fact that they are oldest common US silver or is there a consensus that they are nice looking coins? I'm just curious.

I would be happy to take those "UGLY" coins off your hands. They really are not worth much. ;)

Yep. That's blasphemy alright, but I'm not going to suggest tar and feathers or waterboarding as an expression of my dismay.

Morgans are steeped in history. Not so much that they're artistic or beautiful, it's more what they represented from 1878 to 1921...from the old West to the birth of new industry to World War I and many more.

If looking for disgusting and meaningless designs on US coinage, look no further than the Susan B Anthony dollar as well as most of the Presidential dollars and state quarters. Nothing to be proud of there.

Morgans aren't my favorite, but I've not heard anyone saying they were ugly before.

I shouldn't have gone so far as to say "ugly," I just think they are pretty average looking; but I can understand the historical aspect. I love flying eagle and indian head cents for that reason. And, is it my imagination or are there a lot more highly graded Morgans than other coins from that era? I've never been too into buying graded coins, but for people who are, I can see that appeal.

First...I really like Morgans (you can put down the tar & feathers). But, while the obverse is pleasing enough, I've always thought the eagle looked weak. His neck's too scrawny, and he's got butterfly wings.

Give me a badass eagle anyday...like the seated dollar or trade dollar. They just look meaner.

Stylistically, my favorite is the art deco bird on the 1936 Connecticut centennial commem.

I have NEVER liked the look of a Morgan dollar. The obverse is what I don't like.

Walking Liberty half, Mercury Dime, Flying Eagle cent. Now those have nice a looking obverse.

Now that obverse has eye appeal. Flowing dress, wind in the hair. It catches the eye.

Ewww yuck what happened to your coin doc. Looks like somebody scuffed up all the raised surfaces with a brillo pad and left the recesses nice and shiny. Looks altered to me better break it out of that cheapo plastic and send it off to the scrapper...... Morgans are just "eh" to me, I only like them because they are one of the most popular numismatic coins out there, probably the most popluar. I've got a set at my momma's house, well more like she has a set that I traded to her a while back for 250.00 face in 90%. Figured it was the only way to keep me from selling it and I still get to look at it :)
