So I can't find anything about this googling but since the ripple stands out and these are in fine shape I thought I would ask for thoughts..

I also notice the ripple on the back of the coin

The coin may have been heated.

need to find a better way to get a good clean closeup... but here is a try at it.
I will say holding it in the light you can see the light bend as you turn the coin so no doubt it is a ripple (waffle).
I just can't find out anything about keeping it.. I think it passes as an error but not sure.

I've seen similar ripples in early 70's halves. None anywhere near as pronounced as yours though. I don't know the cause, maybe die deterioration or metal flow when it was struck???

Does anyone else think it was heated?

I believe totalcount nailed it with die deterioration or worn out die, which ever one prefers.

This is a planchet error if it is one. The die has nothing to do with it i don't think
