real or fake penny

Hi all,
While sorting last night I thought I found a copper slug or blank planchet. However, when I took it out of the sorter, it actually had a 1918 S obverse (pretty fine condition). The reverse is just a flat un-stamped surface. I'm wondering if the coin was altered after minting. It seems unlikely that only half the coin could get struck at the mint.
Thoughts?

I would weigh it. It should be 3.11 grams +/- . And it is under I would post a photo after that. It could be a Struck Through Die Cap see
http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Errors/Struck_Through_Die_Cap.html also at the link you can see other coins and see if the look like yours. But if it is under the 3.11 g I would think it happened after the mint.

Looks like after posting all of Franklins finds and all the fine reading on realcent I now have the same thoughts as the super posters. It is like calling the radio station to find out you are caller number two.

so if it weighs less that 3.1 then what? the reverse is flat and the rim is not rounded.

Examine it under magnification. Does it "feel" real?

Let me clarify this up a bit. My question is not whether the coin is real. I am certain the coin is real [ or at least copper
]
I'm wondering if the error is real or not. Did this happen when someone sanded down one side, or at the mint.

Well, what does it weigh? If it weighs less than the 3.1 grams, then it a safe bet that the coin was altered post mint... when they strike a coin, metal is not removed, the metal is plasticized into the form of the die. Therefore, a blank planchet will weigh the same as a struck coin. So, if the coin weighs less, then metal must have been removed and you have an altered coin. If the coin weighs 3.1 grams, then it is most likely a mint error.
More information (with pictures) is required for a perfect explanation to your situation.
