Found my first 1973 quarter....the one with a horse.

Is this rare? I've seen 1,000's of quarters but this is my first 1973.

I wouldn't say it is rare, but it has been 39 years since it was minted. So natural attrition has reduced its numbers. I have found a few of them.

There were almost 136,000,000 minted. For comparison, there were 192,000,000 minted in '74. Between '70 and '72, there were 10,000,000, 48,000,000 and 43,000,000 minted respectively.

However, there were 2 varieties that year. A Small Bust, and a Large Bust. The commemorative coin was to have a smaller more detailed portrait and fewer rim beads farther from the rim (SB). A small quantity were inadvertently made with the regular portrait from '72 (LB).

It is believed that less than 10,000 of the Large Bust were minted.
