I called a coin shop in a town that was a hour and a half from here are asked if the had any Canadian one and five cent coins and found they had a $148 FV and said he would sell the lot for face. I was going to that City on the weekend and wanted to pick them up but the coin shop was closed weekends. So I had a coworker pick them up for me. The owner of the coin shop said the the were from the twenties to date. So far looks like most are older coins. I am first sort the nickels first by George V, George IV, Young Queen ,Ect. Then I will sort the cents the same way and then sort all by date and tune them all. I am doing this a work at lunch time as we have a new puppy at home . So far I have found the small amount I have look at over forty 1970 that are AU and had a mintage low of 5,726,010 and three King George V. It going to be fun. The break down was $54.11 in cents and $93.55 in nickels.

I went to a coin shop last night that is usually closed when I drive by. I asked about Canadian coinage and they said they save it and spend it on their yearly trip to Quebec. I told them I am in it for metal value and that the pennies and nickels are worth more than face value and they should sell them to me instead of giving them away at FV. I was smiling and jovial the whole time, but this grumpy old couple just growled and told me no. I asked if they had any french coins made of nickel or anything like that. They basically told me to get lost. I got the super-evil-eye from both of them. Don't know what their problem is. "We are coin dealers, not metal dealers" they said. Bunch of old grumps! I was tempted to give them a piece of my mind about how to treat customers but I just said thanks and left.

Nice score Joe. Sounds like you have some good shops around there.

Only one 1948 in the lot.

The low 1948 mintage was because--
1947 Maple Leaf
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia


The 1947 Maple Leaf refers to a set of Canadian coins dated 1947 which bear a tiny maple leaf following the date to denote that they were actually minted in 1948.[1]

Prior to 1948, the obverse legend surrounding the bust of George VI on Canadian coins read "GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP" ("George VI By the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India"). With India gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the legend had to be modified for the 1948 coins to remove "ET IND:IMP", and as the Royal Canadian Mint waited for the modified matrices and punches from the Royal Mint in London, demand for new coinage rose. To satisfy this demand, the RCM struck coins using the 1947 dies with the leaf added to signify the incorrect date. Normal 1948 coins were minted and issued once the modified matrices and punches arrived.

No 1923,1925 but I found out you can use the Ryedale sorter to pull the King George coins.

My weekly LCS visit for Canadians paid off again...out of 20 cents at face, 3 were George Vs...1929, 1931, and 1933...that makes a total of 60 George V cents at or below face this year...only 7 nickels this time, but the first two I picked up were 1937 Dots...some interesting stuff coming out of the cigar boxes down here in the lower Susquehanna Valley!

This week's trip to my LCS for Canadians was a good one, forty cents at face included a 1920, and ten nickels at face included a 1936, and also an uncirculated steel 1953 shoulder fold obverse near maple leaf reverse. The 1953 is the nicest I've seen, and is at least MS-60. Keeps me going back!

I'm sure I've seen this somewhere here, but what is the 1998 cent alloy, and was 1997 a mixed year with copper cents as well as the zinc alloy that followed? I want to think I've got some 1997s that passed the Ryedale comparitor.
