What kind of money would you take traveling abroad. Let's say you wanted to travel all over the world for a year, yet wanted to remain insured, so to speak against finding yourself in foreign country with access to an account full of USA cash that was essentially worthless, or worth much less than necessary. Obviously in any given year this is unlikely to be a problem, so you could assume that for most of your time you have access to money that is worth enough. But just in case , what would you carry as a back-up? Keeping in mind, you don't want to go through customs somewhere and have someone come upon a few gold coins. I was thinking some junk silver, but that might not be recognized throughout the world.

I guess it depends where you are going. Will you be in developed areas? Swiss francs seem to be highly regarded in most places. Perhaps you could have Canadian and Australian dollars as well. Junk silver (both U.S. and Canadian) should be recognized in most areas.
