and today I got a notice from CITI cancelling my credit card... since I haven't used it in years. And I thought that getting and staying
out of debt was supposed to be a good thing? :oops:

You need to use your dormant cards. Charge $100 and pay it off before any interest accrues. Do that once per year on every card you have. A spreadsheet helps to keep track.
