Prepping skills learning curve

Nickeless had a post about your biggest prepping mistakes.
I thought another idea would be on a prepping learning curve.
You know, things you thought would be easy or go smoothly, but then :o

I recently learned my coffee stash will only last about 1/3 as long as I had planned for it.
I decided to check how fast I go thru 1 container of coffee. turns out really fast.
don't store pinto beans long term in the bag they came in.

with the wood stove at our cabin,
I thought I knew what i was doing
stuff as much wood in it as you can fit before bed, then choke it so it burns slowly.
Cough cough, Choke the intake not so much the exhaust pipe.

You will burn 3x as much wood when it in the 20's during the day and single digits at night,
then you will when it's 40's day and 20's at night.

I need advice on this one.
I could barely see the black dot sight on my Izzy
Outside in broad daylight, I had not noticed it.
Inside in just a slightly dim range, I could barely find it.
any suggestions?
paint it white ?

"Izzy"? SKS?

I think I've seen replacement front sights made of translucent plastic somewhere.
