I have one of these. It works very well actually. Except mine is metal, definitely get the plastic one! they are hard to dry and rust readily when metal. Lots of nooks and crannies.
Washing by hand takes a lot of water though, and I never had a wringer for the water. they can be expensive but makes the job much easier Im told by a few I know who have them.
I dont really use the plunger to often, but I still break it out. Especially with larger items like a particularly dirty blanket. They really do work well.

This is one of those "prepper" items that I have, that I hope to never have to use.

I've seen these in a catalog I get and always wondered how they worked. I may have to pick one up - hopefully I'll never have to use it for normal clothes washing, but it might be nice for dog blankets and whatnot.

The way I "hand washed" clothing was doing the monster mash. (By foot)
