Returning Coins to Banks with COVID-19 Fears Abounding

I am curious about everyone's experiences in terms of taking coins back to banks (or S&L's for that matter). I had a small local bank that used to have a machine that account holders could use for free. I used them a lot over the years.

I checked with a couple of their branches and was told that the machines are not available to the public for the foreseeable future. They did say that I could bring them rolled coins. I had turned in my wrappers to the bank as I didn't think I needed them anymore. Oh well...

Now it was time to get more wrappers. I just wanted to roll half dollars as I could do $250 pretty quickly to get some spare cash- need the $ for a handyman. But the first bank I went to didn't have any half dollar wrappers (or coins). The second bank was closed- no drive through or appointment only- simply closed until further notice. The third one was able to provide me with the wrappers I needed.

Including time spent rolling the coins and driving to 4 banks instead of just 1, it probably took an extra 1 1/2 hours or so to do the job the new way.

What kind of experiences has everyone else had? If you have a pile of coins that you haven't returned, why not?

It's interesting you say your bank said you could bring in rolled coins.

I have a rolling machine and rolled up a bunch of pennies and took them to my bank. The teller took them and stood there and busted open all my machine rolled pennies so she could run them through their coin counter. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I could see doing that on hand rolled coins but anything that is machine rolled you know there is 50 coins in each roll. NO need to bust open the rolls.

Sure there is. Someone could, for instance, fill the rolls with worthless little zinc discs that look like cents.

Well then when I go to the bank and get rolls of coins from them. I am going to stand there and bust them all open. You never know what they might be putting in the rolls and trying to pass them off as coins.

This a local small town bank that I have been a customer of for OVER 40 years. I can maybe see doing this if I walk into a bank in a large city where they don't know me.

I just thru out a full box of Half wrappers about two months back....oh well.

I have four accounts at two different banks and two different FCU's all lobbies are closed....no access to the coin counters currently...I have about 40k cents that need to go back...I guess I will hang on to them a little longer. I still have 20 boxes of cents unsorted...I guess they can wait awhile...so I switched over to my RCBS sorter for now.

So this question could use its own thread...I have an account at Bank of America...they removed there ability for drive through banking a few years ago and with the lobbies closed...i wonder how they are banking now...all thru the ATM? I keep this account cuz it is where I (did) get my halves. I also fund my PPFF account thru the B of A.

Dude, I can guarantee they have been passing zinc discs off on you 100%.

My bank lobby is closed but they will open for you if you make an appointment. I have not tried it yet for coins but you might check with your bank and see if they will open for you to dump your coins. You might be able to dump some coin through the drive thru. At my bank, the drive thru closest to the building has a sliding compartment that you could probably put a bag of coin through.

Yeah, if the banks hate cash (Federal Reserve Hiney Wipes) they really hate those heavy, moldy, dirty, oxidizing, machine-jamming coins. This Corona tail-whippin' we're getting is useful to the banks in so many ways, not to mention all the bail out money they're getting from their friends at the Fed and the Treasury. Can we please see one more picture of that felon, goofy ol' Mnuchin, and his Hollyweird wife holding up a sheet of hunerts for us to gawk at? Garshk, I didn't know there was that much money in the whole word.
