What is Something You’d Do For An Emergency $100?

Postby Recyclersteve » Sat Nov 02, 2024 3:02 am

Random question- Let’s say you badly need $100 in a hurry. No job, expenses, maybe something even bigger. What could or would you do quickly to get fast money?

My thought: I could easily throw the A,B,C’s (aluminum, brass and copper) into my car to go to the scrap yard.

Runner-up: Trade a stock- could probably get a few thousand quickly, but you have to wait til the next day before the trade settles and you can have cash.

Very curious to hear the random answers on this one.

NOTE: ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- often
substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

Interesting question!

I keep my yearly change finds in a bag, in coin form, so I don't use it. So, I always have an emergency $100.

All of the following are possible if you allow them to count:

1. Drive or walk to the nearest ATM
2. Call a family member within reasonable distance
3. Sell silver or gold at the nearest pawn or coin shop
4. Be willing to do dirty filthy dangerous work for cash. Work that other people are not willing or able to do
Buy rolls NOW while you still can!

This thread is off to an interesting start.

I bet there are members who will throw some absolute gems and thought provoking items.

Once my wife and I decided to eliminate all debt, having cash on hand for emergencies became easy. Several hundred in mixed bills in the safe. Over six months expenses between various savings and money market accounts (this IS the Emergency Fund). The remainder of non retirement accounts in a conservative mix of stock and bond funds.

In short, with a little planning, I no longer need to worry about selling stuff, or finding short time work for an emergency.

Time for more coffee.

Hafta ask- have you ever owned a coffee stock (Starbucks or other)? Anyone who had SBUX for 20-30 years is likely quite happy.

Assuming I didn't already have the $100 and needed it quickly, I'd head to the pawn shop. A couple silver coins or some jewelry wife hasn't worn in years should sell to cover.

So far nobody has discussed drugs, except for caffeine. Whew!

The best coffee is free coffee, unless it is Starbucks. My deep seated prejudice against all things Seattle requires me to pour that out immediately.
