Bringing Canadian copper into the US

Are there any laws (Can. or US) concerning driving large amounts of Canadian cents into the US? I know anything that has a value of $10,000 USD or more must be declared coming in, but what about amounts under that? How about just a few hundred bucks worth?

You are free and clear to bring cash into the states, it just has to be declared if it's over $10,000. On the old forum there was a photo of one member's pickup truck loaded with 5 gallon buckets of Canadian pennies and nickels he brought back...

Sweet. I've got a friend who lives in Vancouver. Just gotta talk her into picking up some coin, driving them into Washington state and flat rate shipping those bad boys.

I have been told that it is OK but I thought I would try asking so I Emailed the Canadian mint and The Department of Justice Canada.
And got back this back from Department of Justice Canada--
Hello,
The Department of Justice Canada cannot assist you. Our mission is to provide legal assistance to the government. To know if you can send coins to the U.S. please contact the Canada Border Services Agency http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca . To know if you can melt them in the US contact the Royal Canadian Mint http://www.mint.ca/

So I Emailed Canada Border Services Agency this--
Transporting Canadian coins out of Canada
I live in the US and my son who has autism like to collect coins he has a Canadian set started. I asked a friend if he could buy me some rolls of coins the next time he is a Canada and bring them back. He is worry that it might be not lawful to do so as it is unlawful to take more than $5 US dollars of US 1 cent and 5 cent out. See -- http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=press_release&ID=724. The fines on the US side can be stiff " of not more than $10,000, or imprisonment of not more than five years, or both, against a person who knowingly violates the regulations. In addition, by law, any coins exported, melted, or treated in violation of the regulation shall be forfeited to the United States Government".
So is it the same way taking coins out of Canada.

Thanks
Joe Henry

I will post when I hear back! :D

I doubt you here back.....

As long as you declare its $10,000 there are no laws against it. You might get tied up at the border for alittle bit because its unusal but they can't really do anything to you.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) appreciates your interest in ensuring that you meet the Cross Border Currency Reporting requirements upon exiting Canada. As you may be aware, the CBSA is responsible for the administration and enforcement of Part II of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act. Part II requires the reporting of currency or monetary instruments in the actual possession of a person arriving in or departing from Canada. Each traveller is responsible for his or her own declaration.

There are no restrictions on the amount of currency or monetary instruments that you can bring into or take out of Canada, nor is it illegal to do so. However, you have to report to the CBSA amounts equal to or greater than CAN$10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency. If you require further information on the CBSA’s Cross Border Currency Reporting Program, please visit our Web site at
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/security-sec ... u-eng.html

For information regarding the importation of coins into the United States, we suggest that you contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection for assistance with this matter at http://www.cbp.gov ,
or 1-703-526-4200.

We trust that this information is useful to you. Thank you for contacting the Canada Border Services Agency.

Must be nice to be Canada. Only have one border, and that's shared with the greatest country on the planet. :D

Don't forget the legalized medical marijuana, nationalized healthcare, and nationally recognized gay marriage. We could learn a few things from our friendly neighbors to the north.

I assume that you mean we could learn a few things not to do here.

Yeah, I'm a crazy liberal. However that I realize that is NOT the focus of this forum and I'll (mostly) keep my commie, pink-o, radical, left-wing craziness to my self. I'm still a copper reclamation specialist, just like you guys. I just want to make a profit off this thing while I can like any red blooded capitalist, liberal or otherwise.

Is the question really about bringing into the US or the melt laws?

I do recall reading a US law discussing that you can be prosecuted for selling melted down metals of the same likeness composition as the us penny.

You're not the only non-conservative here. I'm a long way from calling myself a Republican (or a Democrat, either).

Ed,

I am really poor because of countless bad decisions and improper parenting. Could you please spread the wealth and send me a portion of your copper and silver? If not, I will use the full force of my quasi government agencies to procure this wealth from you. In the future, I implore you to please work even harder so that I can have more of your stuff.

OK, sorry everyone, had to do it.

Sadly, on 2 out of Eds 3 "likes" about Canada, I agree with him. I must confess that I am a cooky Libertarian (leaning conservative). I love the USA, but I hate big government taking my money or telling me or anyone else what to do. My life would be complete if Ron Paul was somehow elected to run this mess.

I live on the border Upstate NY, and used to travel to Canada (montreal) 3+ days a week. I have never had a problem bring back boxes of nickels or pennies. They might look at you funny and ask a few extra questions but its no problem and no laws are being broken.

Nice official confirmation that moving Canadian coins south is perfectly legal. I've done it plenty, its totally legal and no one cares. Only the Americans have silly laws restricting the flow of pocket change.

For NHsorter and others who espouse similar views:

I run a sweet gangster type organization. We make so much money we have bought all the politicians. They have enacted laws that favor our organization over any competition that might arise to the various businesses we run. Also we are awarded no bid and other insider government contracts which we get to sell items like toilet seats worth about 5 bucks for 500. If you tax us or try to appropriate our wealth you will be branded a socialist/communist pinko. We have enough money to hire public relations firms, academics, and media organizations to make people think they are communists if they oppose us. We use the same means to divide and conquer the general population getting them to attack the powerless instead of directing their ire towards us. We are above the law. Big government? We control big government! Life is good!
