Sorting Canadian Pennies

Do you seperate the Canadian pennies by copper composition or by king, queen, or other? I'm just trying to get a little more organized here. Looking for tips and suggestions from our professionals here on the forum! Thanks!

I'd sub-sort later when the pickings get thin.

I just throw all of the Canadians into one big cup no matter what year or design they are.

To make it faster for me, I've always sorted them by king and queen and then broken down the modern Elizabeth's according to composition.

Being from Canada, I sort them by the following date-range, as they do not have all the same copper content:
1942 - 1977 Cent
1978 - 1979 Cent
1980 - 1981 Cent
1982 - 1996 Cent

After 1996, the canadian pennies are worth less than 0.4 cent in metal content. Before 1942, I keep them aside as they might appeal to a collector.

I just decided to seperate them by their obverse. I got the kings hanging out together. Then it's the young, good looking, queen. And last, the older queens. I'm on my way to making a $25 box!

I sort the Elizabeth II pennies into the following categories:

1953-1964 98% copper, 0.5% tin, 1.5% zinc, first EII portrait;
1965-1977 98% copper, 0.5% tin, 1.5% zinc, second EII portrait;
1978-1996 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc; and,
1997-1999 98.4% zinc, 1.6% copper plating.

I sort by obverse just like TJCF. A little glass jar for each design.

All Canadian Cu goes into the same rolls except for the older Kings. They go into their own tube.

i go by weight also ,

so george, young queen, 67-dove, 68-79, 80-81, 82-89, 90--96.

But son Franklin sorts this way----
1926-36 George V own tube unless 1922,1923,1924,1925,1926 Key Dates $$$$$$$$
1937-52 George VI own tube
1953-64 Elizabeth own tube
1965-66 Toss
1967 Own tube
1967 to date he tosses but keeps all copper-platted steel cent 2002-2006 Marked with P After 2006 he uses a magnet to find the steel ones. The steel ones are hard to find here in Oregon the magnet in the coin counter get the steel ones.
Franklin is not into saving copper just likes to find odd things.

Currently (I'm new to the penny hoarding thing), I separate into the following...
1942-1977
1978-1979
1980-1981
1982-1996
All 1997 and newer are deposited in another bank.

I'm thinking it would be more efficient to save 1942-1996 all together, they are all 98% copper so it would be easy to determine approx. melt value by total weight. This would give you the highest ratio of amount sorted to time spent.
Looking for dates really burns up the hours.

You don't even need to look at dates. If the coin has sides or a younger queen its a keeper. Round and older queen it goes back to the bank.
