Finally!!

Postby scyther » Fri Sep 07, 2012 11:19 pm

After searching almost exactly (half way through the bag that will take me from 925-1000) $1000 in pennies, I have finally found a 1943! Not sure how it made it through the coin counter, but it is indeed magnetic.

I know it's not much compared to some of you guys' 1909 S VDB finds, but I'm happy :)

Thanks unfortunately it will probably take much longer to get the D and S mint ones.

It's in pretty good condition... I wonder if someone could have stripped and re-plated it at some point... hopefully not...

Congrats! I've only found 2 I think in about $4000 sorted. Very dirty, but I set them aside with the other cool items

Just picked up my first box of pennies in 3 months and it was all 2012. >.<

I set up magnets on my Ryedale chutes that catch all the steel coins. More escape the bank's machines than you would think. I've found several. Some are in great shape.

Congrats! I got a steel cent in one of my very first boxes of pennies 5 years ago. I am still looking for my next steel cent.

Excellent find, and I hope many more exciting ones to come! I never could have imagined all the crazy coins I have come across in my couple years sorting already.

Not sure how much I've sorted to date but I have found one of the zinc coated steel
pennies from 1943 in circulation here in Canada. Also have annother 5 I bought years
ago out of curiosity after I read about them, paid 5¢ U.S. each for the ones I bought.
Of course back then I didn't know the regular U.S. pennies already had zinc on the
_inside_ didn't discover that until 2006ish when I started reading coinflation.

Adding a magnet to my ryedale set up next time I get it out.

Also, the bank where I get my bags throws the coins that they find on the magnet into the machine when it is open. They get sorted like normal after the magnet. I once got 50ish 1943 in one bag.

Wow, I really hope that happens to me some day. Maybe I should ask them what they do with the reject coins and if they could save them for me...

Does anyone know if a large powerful magnet close to the comparator causes any problems for it? Mine is a strong 1/2" cube neodymium about 1.5" below the zinc exit point and stuck to the sheet metal steel box that the Ryedale sits on.
