3 errors on 1 penny? Or just a bad day at the mint?

Postby Zincanator » Tue Jan 08, 2013 11:05 pm

Found this odd 1969-D and immediately had to take a closer look.

First on the back I saw what appears to be the decorative outer rim from a different coin... but can't think any US coin in 1969 with that dotted rim?

Next on the front I noticed E PLURIBUS UNUM inverted and stamped into the original date area.

Finally I saw part of ONE CENT stamped in a different area, but not inverted this time.

Any ideas on how this coin got so many odd scars??

a different coin was put on top of it and hit with a hammer.

Aw man, I was hoping since the "CE" isn't backwards, the hammer theory wouldn't stick. Oh well, guess I need to keep looking for that coin that'll put my kids through college :-)

Just wondering... what type of camera are you using take the pictures? They look good.

Agreed. My close-up photography also needs improvement.

Thanks! I took those using an iPhone 4 with a 16x loupe placed in front of the lens. Lighting can be tricky as seen by the big shadows in those pics.

Cool, I just tried it out taking a pic with a loupe held up to my phone. Lighting was just the regular florescents here in the office. Came out pretty decent with very little effort.

Nice! Quite amazing what these little phones can do nowadays. I sold my fancy-shmancy DSLR camera because I just never use it anymore.
