Starting the year with .999 copper

This past Saturday was my first chance to pick up coins for sorting this year. One of the banks I stopped at was a bank that I recently opened an account at with the expectation that it would be a convenient dump bank. I decided to ask for $5.00 in pennies on my first visit to get familiar with the bank first. The teller handed me a bundle of customer wrapped rolls which seemed heavier than normal and were in pretty old looking wrappers. My first thought was that these must be solid copper rolls so I asked for all the rest they had and for any other denominations of rolled coins that might have come in with the customer that brought in these pennies. All they had was another $5.00 of pennies so I took them and continued on my route to pick up at a few other banks.

Tonight was my first chance to do a little sorting so I picked the $10 batch of old looking CWRs and got started. The first four rolls had nothing newer than 1964 and contained about one full roll of wheats. I started finding some "newer" pennies from '68 and '69 mixed in some of the other rolls. The rolls with the oldest looking wrappers were giving up a lot of wheats. One had about 40 wheats in it. I found a total of 265 wheats including one 1943-S steel cent. Surprisingly none were older than 1940. I also found a 1951 Canadian cent. If it wasn't for the one steel cent in there this batch would have been 100% copper. But I am happy with the .999 yield.
