I moved my hoard today

Postby RichardPenny43 » Mon Jan 23, 2012 2:09 am

In the past year of hand sorting, I have acquired over $900.00 FV of Cu cents. Today I moved my hoard from a first floor closet to the basement. It took about an hour and alot of sweat. I'm not looking forward to the day I have to move it up and out.

Make sure it is staying dry. You don't want to end up with fuzzy green mountains.

I will be moving mine within the next month or so and will figure to be 4 or 5 tons when everything is factored in. Surely not looking forward to that!

I am planning on moving in a year or so and I've only got a ton. I am dreading that day. In the end, it will all be worth it though. :D

Will be having to move mine in about 3 months - hopefully to its permanent (at least in my lifetime) location. About 3000 lbs now. At least I can do it over a few days...

Last week, a little over a year later and I moved it again.
This time it was because I sold 20 CTU's! :D

My back still hurts.
I decided that I need a better way to move them other then zip-loc bags and buckets.
Heavy duty bags with handles will make the next move much easier.
I think these bags look good, anyone else use these?

what i have always done is count them into $25 lots and put them back into the penny boxes. you have to reinforce the sides with tape, and tap them a few times, and then tape them up into bricks. if you have a large hoard, anything heavier than $25 will wear you out. plus, the bricks stack decently. if you are diligent about this, then you don't need to recount when you sell or trade.

I don't use that literal brand but I do use the equivalent. The important thing is to get a Fed rated bag.

Just get canvas bags from the Portland Mint. Buy a bunch at a time and Adam will hook you up. Much classier means of storing your hoard. Even though they don't have a handle, once you tie off the top, they are still quite easy to grab and carry.

They are nice but I need moisture resistance, so I use the HD plastic. When I have coin already in the cloth bags I still put them in the plastic bags to keep the humidity cycling down.

When you get $50 bags of pennies from the bank, just cut a 3 inch slice on the edge opposite where the flap seal is and dump them out. You can then insert this slice/hole into your coin counter or get a large funnel if you are hand counting and put $50 back into the bag. Seal the sliced edge with packing tape, fold in half and tape it top to bottom. Makes a neat $50 tight package and you can lay them flat, criss cross them and they stack great. I have some stacked 10 high and they are freestanding. I also add a dessicant bag to each bag to keep out moisture.

I usually put a bunch of those silicon package thingies you get with shoes, etc and place them on top of the cents to keep the moisture out.

I also heard that if you put a bag of rice in with the cents, the rice will absorb the moisture too.
