Old Bank Wrapped Rolls To Open or Not to Open

Postby Pennysaved » Sun Sep 08, 2013 10:10 pm

The tellers at one of my pick up banks sold me 20 rolls of bank rolled pennies

Some of them have First National Bank of Arizona written on them and other have the old white and red brandt inc watertown wis paper wrappers

The brandt wrapped pennies have 1980 pennies on each side

The First National Bank of AZ has pennies from the 70s on each end.

The wrappers are definitely old so I am assuming they are full copper rolls.

Would you open them or leave them in the original wrapper?

open them. there is no "extra" value to the mystery with those dates on the ends, unless they are bu rolls.

Weigh them. A solid copper roll should be around 155 grams.

lets assume they are 100% copper....then you have what $0.75 of value to each roll.

you should open them. if they are rolled up in rolls from the 70's and 80's and happen to be circulated cents........there could be anything in there like a 1909 svdb or a copper 1943, you really never know.

I once found a MS 1909 vdb in a roll!

I wouldn't open them just because of the cool factor. Sometimes old bank rolls go for a premium on Ebay.

Let them sit somewhere you can see them on a regular basis, like your stacking cave table. Look at the wrapper, old, cool, a thing of the past. Think "who knows what treasures lurk but just inside the paper wrapping". Keep from opening them as long as you can, delay the gratification. Then when you just can't stand it any longer, open them. You'll get one of two things: Gratification; delayed.

Just kidding. Open now. You either get the treasure you can share the experience with us all, or not. Better to get either earlier than later.

Yah, selling them is a good idea, if you had a decent coin at the end of the roll. I used to keep my rolls that had wheat pennies on the ends. But, yeah, hold them for awhile first. When I was searching more, if I stumbled upon some good boxes I'd keep some around so I had something "funner" to search through later.

Jump off that fence and shred those rolls.
Rip into them NOW and post what you find!
There could be an nice looking 1914D in there, times awasting!!

I think I would surely keep them. If ever curious, I would open just to see what they are. I don't think I would sell them unopened if it were me. You just never know for sure what is in them!
