"1809" penny

Postby J_Dodge » Wed Feb 05, 2014 3:43 pm

Stopped at a branch office of a local bank, this office just a couple blocks from where I work. The teller ran my
coins thru the counter, I got my cash. I then asked what is done with the junk coins the counter rejects - foreign or
US?

The lady told me that they give it back to the customer, or if not wanted, throw it in the trash. To that - I asked if
they would keep it for me, I explained that I wanted it for my grandaughter - geography and math type
games, etc. The teller was agreeable to that, so I gave her my name and phone number.

The teller then said that today she had stumbled on a 1809 penny....What?!?!?!?! I says. Lem'me see that.
I figured she might have transposed the date on a Indian - but if it was truely from 1809, there was no
telling what it might be. Either way, I wanted it.

So she is digging thru her change, finds it, hands it to me. H-U-G-E let down. It was a 2009, she was looking
at the backside image of the cabin.

I am still amazed that so many tellers that deal with money on a almost daily basis are so uniformed.... but hey... that's a good thing for us sorters most of the time! :shh:
