What to do with bulk unsorted pennies

Postby Lemon Thrower » Wed Sep 02, 2020 3:02 pm

I have a large tub of pennies, unsorted. I would estimate $800-1,000.

I got these 10+ years ago and I would estimate they are 25% coppers.

I don't have time to sort them, even with my ryedale.

I have a counter and a scale and could put them into $25 bags and deposit at the bank. Still a lot of work, and that is my default.

Any other ideas on how to move these that is superior to putting them back into the system?

I'm in Atlanta.

I have to admit that it would be fun going through a bunch of these, but I'm not anywhere close to Atlanta.

Very good memory. Just getting back out to my trailer. Still over 100 degrees, new record high for tomorrow
That $100 batch I did last weekend, in the AC of the house.

I can't think of a better option than what you are doing right now. I have to roll the pennies I take back. I was wondering what the rest of you were doing.

At one point I had about 300 K copper pennies, almost all loose. In the last few years I've had doubts as to whether I'd live to see them gain any real value. I started going through them bit by bit; keeping and rolling the clean ones while taking the rest back to the bank, again rolled. I made some progress over the Spring/Summer shutdown, managing to get through about half of the pile. I know that it is a mortal sin on this site to throw copper back into the wild, but I mollified myself by using the most of the proceeds to add to the AG/AU stack. I even took a box the coppers that were in decent shape to my LCS and traded them in for some 90%. I felt slightly better knowing the box of CU would find a home in the owner's garage.

I keep seeing people with dumps of them at the farmer's market. It's a shame nothing's happening with coppers yet.

Have you checked with a local coin club or at a local coin show? You could take a single bag of $25 face with you and also carry a photo of the entire lot for reference.

On the other hand, if FE will help, that sounds pretty intriguing.

If I was near you geographically, I'd be all over the entire lot. I'm surprised nobody in your area has stepped up yet. Perhaps that is more a commentary on how quiet this website has become.

Pennies have been moved to South Richmond Va. I found a credit union with a counting machine, yeah! I figure I have close to $1400.

PM me if you are interested. I travel to Philly occassionally.

I'd buy 'em at face if you can throw in the used Ryedale at a reasonable price.

I'm in DC.
