Cool coin? Rare or Fake?

Postby timmus0382 » Fri Mar 25, 2011 4:00 pm

Found this while opening up some rolls, it stood out like a sore thumb. Could this silver penny be a mistake from the mint and be all zink or could it be part of a science project? What do you know of the rarity of a penny struck without a copper coating? The penny is a 1988.

I found an uncoated zinc, but it's quite dull. Could someone have plated it with one of those Ebay kits?

Be careful it's not a (sic) reglar ol penny with mercury smeared all over it. Back when we were kids, early 60's, you used to bust open a glass thermometer and gather up the mercury and rub it on pennies to make them shine. Yep, some of us are even still alive to tell the tale, and it's true. :(

Looks like somebody nickel plated it. We sometimes do that at the plating shop for the fun of it.

Here's a link on how to make "silver" or "gold" pennies.
