Argh! I think I got somebody's nasty hoard

Postby HPMBTT » Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:00 am

So....I had like around $100 dollars in CWR's to go through. And all of a sudden, I'm hitting roll after roll of nasties, where the entire roll was loose dirt, gunky green coins with dust, bent coins or ones with pieces missing etc. Disgusting. And I got like 20 rolls of them!! ARGH! Don't you hate that?? So now I have a half a box that I have to go through manually, roll them and unload them on somebody else. The good news is, I learned after the first five rolls to always check the first few coins, as I had been knifing through the middle of the roll like I usually do; plus, the guy always put them in the same style of generic wrapper and didn't go a very good job of it; so it was a dead giveaway. So when I hit the first three coins by peeking inside and determined they were yuck, I kept the whole roll intact so I didn't have to roll all 50 later.

Still, it was a pain. The only thing I can think of is that I got somebody else's hoard. Does this ever happen to any of you? What do you do when it happens to you? Just curious.

On a positive note, here's what I got out of 9038 good pennies (about $90.00), as I'm sure you all would like to know how I did, right?? :)

1804 coppers (just under 20%)
4 CDN coppers
17 Wheats (earliest 1940 and only one s-mint) :|

Foreign stuff! Including stuff I never found before:
'95 Deutscheland 2 Pfennig
'54 Republique Francaise 10 Francs (isn't this part silver? I'll have to look it up)
Tiny old brown-colored Indian Rupee
2 GB New Penny (1989/1971); these may be half-penny, but not sure

I think there used to be an acronym's section. If not, someone should create one:

CDN: Canadian
CWR: Customer Wrapped Roll

Hate that. I just keep plodding through them, fearful there may be a 14d tucked in with the encrusted zincs. Any unrecognizable from both sides go in the garbage...copper, zinc, wheat, gold doubloon, I don't care.

CDN - canadian
CWR - customer wrapped roll

Yeah, when they're that nasty, they just go immediately into the crap pile to be re-rolled later. No machine needed. Yech.

For some reason, I thought the early francs were part silver...maybe that was Switzerland? I dunno. Guess I'll whip out the Krause book when I get home tonight. :)

Post war they are silver, pre war some were. The 5 francs of the 1960s are .835 silver, I have 4x 1965 5 francs left over from a collection of random foreign coins, very pretty coins.

By the 50s France had been through several different Francs and different Republics. Switzerland had the same franc forever until taking the silver out in '67.

Thanks for the info on the (France) franc. Still, it's a cool looking coin, even if it isn't silver. I may have to expand my hoard to include francs. :)

Any coppers in those, they would be the best ones to melt after the ban is over. I have a big jar full of nasties that are copper.

What kind of cleaning solution should one use? Today I was able to get a few rolls of George V and a few wheat rolls for face. The catch.. They were in a plastic pages that made them a bit sticky. There are a few dates in there that I need for my folder. I dont know if I should just leave them as they are or attempt to de-sticky them. I also got .999Ni nickels with them for face and they are in the same condition... just I dont need any of them for my folder.
