weird penny today

Postby rsk1963 » Thu Jun 09, 2011 1:22 pm

Found a penny that seems to be a complete reverse of the traditional penny. In that it is font and everything is backward and indented rather than out, what in gods name is this guy? I'll be able to post a picture (hopefully the quality will be alright) when I get home.

I too found an odd cent today. The obverse has the Lincoln Memorial and the reverse has Lincolns head. WEIRD looking coin.

HA...
I mean the font, the images, all are reverse i.e. from left to right on the back it reads: tnec eno rather than one cent. Front is the same way everything is backwards, images are imprints (sunken in).

I found this-- http://www.coinvaluesmag.com/articles/unexpanded-mirror-brockages-require-special-c/
A brockage is an incuse, mirror-image version of a coin’s design. It is generated when a coin is struck into a planchet or when two previously-struck coins overlap within the striking chamber.

The most desirable kind of brockage is a first impression (“first-strike brockage”) that is sharply defined and shows little or no expansion. Many first-strike brockages are expanded and distorted. The subset that exhibits minimal expansion emerges under special circumstances. These original-size, incuse impressions are often termed “mirror brockages.” Regrettably, the term “mirror brockage” has been indiscriminately applied to brockages that fall far short of the strict standards maintained here.

So two sided brockage (from what i've been reading is traditionally one side messed up...) any clue on valuations?

dimenions/thickness levels appear to be the same as a regular penny (ryedale acutally said it was copper)... hand sorting the coppers for wheats and found this monster...

Wow that is pretty cool. I'm interested to know how much this thing is worth. It seems like people that collect error coins would pay quite a bit for a coin like this.

It's dated 1981 so it should be copper.

I email Mike Diamond he is the President of Coneca http://www.conecaonline.org and--
Hi Joe.

Regrettably, this is not a genuine error. Someone took an unstruck cent planchet (or similar-sized disc of copper) and squeezed it between two cents.

Best regards,

Mike Diamond

I have a blank planchet and will try to make one and will post what I get.

So a large vise might help!

Awesome. While I cant say I'm not disappointed (truthfully) it is very good to know, and I can't thank you enough from your CSI Readlcent tests. And of course everyone now knows that this is not a weird "error" but someone just f***ing off. Thanks very much for your help in determining this monster (now apparently a frankenstein, piece mailed together) oddity.
